Edan [Onile] Orisa – Ogboni [Osugbo] – Yoruba History

ABORIGINE OGBONI HISTORY

Aborigine Ogboni history goes way back to the period of human ancient civilization in Ife-Oodaye. It goes way back before Oduduwa came to Ile-Ife.

WHO WAS ODUDUWA?

Oduduwa is Prince Ekaladerhan of Bini Kingdom who came to Ife by 900 years ago, overthrown Obatala and became king of Ife. Oduduwa is the father of all Yorubas.

ODUDUWA’S TRIBUTE TO HIS ANCESTORS IN IFE

Oduduwa kept a special seat of power to his ancestors in his palace in Ife as a great tribute to them. It is one of the most highly consecrated mysterious seat of powers in Ife that no mortal on earth can seat on it except the great King of Bini Kingdom that can seat on it.

Even the Oni of Ife who is the highest ranking king in the whole of Yorubaland is not qualified to seat on it and no other Yoruba kings like Alaafin of Oyo or other Obas in Yoruba land can seat on it. This mysterious seat of power, respect, honour and glory is not used to this very day by anyone but it is reserved only for the great King of Bini Kingdom that can use it as he pleases.

THE HISTORY OF YORUBA

Back then, there was nothing like Yoruba, the people that occupied the present geographical area of the present Yoruba land were called Ife and they spoke Ife language.

WHO ARE THE YORUBA’S?

The name Yoruba came into existence from Oduduwa who after conquering the land of Ife and it neighbouring environs, name them Yoruba for easy identification.

THE FALL OF IFE

It was in the reign of Obatala that Ife fell to the Bini prince Oduduwa who arrived at Ife with his followers for the sole purpose to become the king of Ife. He overthrown the existing King of Ife by launching sophisticated attacks on Ife and Obatala defense was no match to Oduduwa.

Back the, Obatala was the head of Ogboni in Ife and he used Ogboni members like Awo Ogboni, to fight Oduduwa wasnt a member of Ogboni

WHAT IS IYA OGBONI?

Since Obatala and his cabinets were no match to Oduduwa, Obatala resulted to other clever war tactics to discover the secrets of Oduduwa by sending one of the most beautiful lady in the world at that time to marry king Oranmiyan, son to Oduduwa and the name of this beautiful lady is Moremi from Ofa town. Iya Ogboni was named after queen Moremi from Ofa town who became the wife of King Oranmiyan son of Oduduwa.

OSUGBO / OGBONI IN IJEBU, EGBA, REMO…

Ogboni fraternity is also known as Osugbo in Ijebu, Egba, Remo and other Yoruba lands. In this part of Yoruba land, Ogboni operates more like an electoral council for electing Yoruba Kings and dethroning bad Yoruba kings, setting up good laws, setting up curfews in crisis, settling communities crisis…etc. They had strong social influence of the people in these part of the Yoruba land.

REFORMED OGBONI FRATERNITY HISTORY

Reformed Ogboni Fraternity also known as ROF was established in the year 1914 by an Anglican priest, Reverend Thomas Adesina Jacobson Ogunbiyi who reformed the rituals and symbols of Aboriginal Ogboni Fraternity which is also known as A.O.F.

The reason Reverend Thomas Adesina Jacobson Ogunbiyi reformed the rituals and symbols of Aboriginal Ogboni Fraternity was for ROF to be acceptable to Christians, Muslims and non-Yoruba. That was an excellent marketing strategy for ROF.
